eating hawaiian
Ian and I just got back from a trip to Hawaii! Wonderful place, of course and the food I find quite curious. In Kauai at least, you have a large majority of people who are caucasion and Filipino. There are many people of Asian decent too, but Hawaiians are almost the minority. It's an interesting mix of people, and more or less interesting food. A lot of Ahi poke (raw ahi tuna marinated, usually served with seaweed salad) You can find it at local grocery stores and deli's. It is awesome, but gets to be too much after a few days in a row. One of my other favorites is the sweet bread rolls that have black bean paste inside. The lady at the local market told me to smash the roll so the filling gets evenly dispersed inside. It is a sweet purple/blackish paste, that is hopefully somewhat healthy because it is made from beans right? :) It is interesting about Hawaii that you have such a mixture of people, different cuisines, mango trees lining the roads and did I mention the roosters?!! They call them their most un-endangered animal! You now what I mean if you've been there! Point being, I like Hawaii for many more reasons than their food. Fresh fish is yummy, but there isn't a lot else to shout about, in my opinion.
